Well done to CCBS Girls U18 Basketball team who beat AVS, Donegal yesterday, securing their place in the Regional Final against Loreto, Letterkenny on Thursday.
Girls Under-16 Basketball
On Monday 21st, CCBS defeated Ursuline Sligo’s U-16 Girls Basketball team. This was a great achievement as CCBS had already been beaten twice this year by the same team in the All-Ireland Cup and North West League campaign. The girls started brightly and rushed into an early lead and led 1-5 after the first quarter. However Ursuline fought back only allowing CCBS to score one point in the second quarter. The score at half-time was CCBS 11 – Ursuline 14. The third quarter was very exciting and also very open as both teams managed to score with some impressive offensive play. CCBS were three points behind going into the last quarter and were without two of their best players as both Cliodhna Kerr and Maever Liston were fouled off. However, they defended very well and Claudia Coughlin was exceptional as she scored 12 points in the last quarter. The final score was CCBS 33 – Ursuline 29.

U19 Girls Basketball
The Senior Girls took on St. Nathy’s of Ballaghaderreen, on the 17th of October. It was yet another close match with great scores from Ruta Balezentyte, Dearbhaile Mc Neill, Grainne Gillespie, Claire Breslin, and Maeve Liston. The opening score came from Ruta Balezentyte. Shortly afterwards, Grainne Gillespie made an awesome steal which was followed up with a classy shot from Dearbhaile Mc Neill. More drilling shots were scored by Claire Breslin, Grainne Gillespie and Dearbhaile McNeill. However No.13 from St. Nathy’s made her contribution by scoring eleven points in between the first and second quarter, making it 18-26. The girls made a come-back with Claire Breslin and Grainne Gillespie scoring seven points-a-piece in the third quarter, with McNeill scoring two points. Two free throws were taken by Ruta Balezentyte, who got the first on target and unlucky to miss the second, which made the score 35-34, before Maeve Liston and Grainne Gillespie both scored impressive lay-ups making it 39-34, with one quarter to go. Grainne continued her scoring streak by drilling a superb two point shot. However the St. Nathy’s made the game level points scored by numbers 4, 6, 5 and 13 to make the score 41-41. Chantel Cunningham got her name on the scoring board with two points and less than three minutes to go. Great defence was made by both teams, with Nathy’s unable to muster a score, while Ruta and Chantel getting two points each. With less than a minute to go, Claire Breslin broke through St. Nathy’s defence to score a fantastic two points, to close the game, making it 49-41.
U16 Girls Basketball
The U16 Girls took on St. Nathy’s of Ballaghaderreen on Monday the 17th of October. The final score for the U16 girls was 36-35 with numerous scores and great performances from Roise Keon, Maeve Liston and Cliodhna Kerr. The Colaiste Cholmcille girls were slow to get the rhythm going in the first quarter and had a lot of missed baskets, which could have cost them dearly. But luckily once the girls got scoring, nothing was going to stop them. Our first score came from an admirable Roise Keon, which made the score 2-6, at the end of the first quarter. The second quarter saw the girls get off to a more promising start, with a brilliant lay-up from Maeve Liston. More great scores were made by Maeve Liston, with free throws being taken by Cliodhna Kerr. The score at the end of the second quarter was 9-10 to St. Nathy’s. The third quarter saw no. 9 from St. Nathy’s make her mark on the game, with several scores and free throws making the score 11-18. However scores were made by Maeve Liston, Annie Cassidy and Roise Keon which made the score 16-18. After a brief disruption due to water leakage from the roof of the hall, the third quarter was resumed in the Mercy Hall. Maeve Liston continued her scoring streak, with a first-class lay-up, making the teams level for the first time in game, with only one quarter to go. The last quarter was neck-and-neck , with Claudia Coughlin getting her first score of the game. Once again more points were made by Maeve Liston and Roise Keon, with the final score being made by Maeve , to make the final score 36-35. Well done and best of luck to the girls as they progress into the league.
